Water content query

Hi,

What is the difference in the water contents determined by karl fischer and drying on heating?

Regards Lee

Hi Lee

Fischer titration and drying on heating (loss on drying) are two different methods for determining water content in substances. They have distinct mechanisms, accuracy levels, and applications.

Fischer titration is a chemical method that quantifies water content by using a reaction between water and a reagent, typically iodine, sulfur dioxide, and a base in a suitable solvent (like methanol). This method has High accuracy, specificity to water & is applicable to a wide range of samples (solids, liquids, and gases).

On the other hand, drying on heating technique Involves heating a sample to a specific temperature to evaporate water and other volatiles, and measuring the weight loss which is simple but is less precise and sensitive.
