hi i need ppts and lecture notes for Fish and Shrimp diseases and health management

Have you tried looking for the relevant information at GOI website for the Fisheries and allied streams?

Hi @Arul Sundari

Shrimp diseases can be broadly categorized into viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections.

1. Viral Diseases (Most Dangerous)

  • White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV):
    • Highly contagious; causes rapid mortality in shrimp.
    • Symptoms: White spots on the exoskeleton, lethargy, reduced feeding.
    • Prevention: Biosecurity measures, screening of broodstock, and pond management.
  • Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV):
    • Affects growth and survival; particularly impacts Penaeus vannamei and P. stylirostris.
    • Symptoms: Reduced growth rate, deformed body parts.
    • Prevention: Genetic selection of IHHNV-resistant shrimp strains.
  • Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV):
    • Affects Penaeus vannamei primarily.
    • Symptoms: Red tail fan, soft shell, reduced feeding.
    • Prevention: Use of virus-free post-larvae, improved farm management.

2. Bacterial Diseases

  • Vibrio spp. (e.g., Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus):
    • Causes Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) / Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND).
    • Symptoms: Pale hepatopancreas, slow growth, high mortality.
    • Prevention: Improved water quality, probiotics, and proper sanitation.
  • Necrotizing Hepatopancreatitis (NHP):
    • Caused by a rickettsia-like organism (NHPB).
    • Symptoms: Weakness, empty gut, soft shell.
    • Prevention: Good biosecurity and water quality management.

3. Fungal Diseases

  • Fusarium spp. Infections:
    • Cause shell disease and black gill disease.
    • Prevention: Water quality management, avoiding overfeeding, maintaining hygiene.

4. Parasitic Diseases

  • Microsporidiosis (e.g., Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei - EHP):
    • Causes growth retardation rather than mortality.
    • Symptoms: Reduced growth rate, white fecal matter.
    • Prevention: Use of pathogen-free broodstock and rigorous pond management.
