Role Summary:

We are seeking a versatile avian veterinary care technician who is motivated to contribute to the growth of our avian research program, while continuing to learn on the job. This role involves hands-on, onsite care and handling of chickens and collection and processing of samples in the laboratory, planning and executing of studies, and detailed record-keeping. It may require occasional weekend shifts for continuity of care and study execution. This is a start-up, so be prepared to wear multiple hats.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Aviculture Must be comfortable safely handling chickens in a research setting. Involves managing small flocks; egg collection and incubation; hatching of chicks; and stage specific supportive care of growing chicks.

  • Study Execution: Carry out procedures, for example: safely restrain and give IV injections, collect and process eggs and samples, and ensure lab delivery. Communicate animal health and study updates to supervisor and team members.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain timely and accurate study and animal records to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance

  • Supportive care and intervention: Productively communicate with veterinary and animal care staff and promptly respond to emergent conditions.

  • Adherence to SOPs: Strictly follow SOP’s to ensure biosecurity and enrichment strategies to promote animal welfare

  • Communication: Communicate effectively with supervisor and company team members as well as external veterinary and care staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 to 4 years experience providing hands-on animal care in a research, small animal clinical, farm or zoological setting

  • Undergraduate degree in biological sciences or from a Veterinary Technical program accredited by the AVMA and have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) or a state Licensed Technician Veterinary Exam (LVTE)

Desired Qualifications

  • 1+ years directly working with avian species, especially chickens/poultry

  • Experience recording data in an electronic lab notebook
