We need ~200 to 300 microliters of rat serum. Approximately what volume of blood do we need to draw to end up with that amount of serum? We will need to sample again two weeks later. If you do know the amount of blood needed and can suggest an ideal method to draw the blood it would be appreciated (at this point rat lateral tail vein is what I am thinking).
Thanks.
Rats have about 5–7% of its body weight in blood usually volume (around 5-6 mL in an adult rat) For a typical blood draw, 500-600 µL should be within a safe range.
Use a warm towel or heat pad to dilate the tail veins, making them easier to access. Small, sterile needles (such as 25-27 gauge) and syringes are appropriate for this method.
Its very important to handle the rat gently to minimize stress and discomfort.
